Greater Houston Resiliency Initiative
At CenterPoint Energy, we are working hard everyday to deliver safe, reliable energy to the communities we are privileged to serve. Since 2024, as part of the Greater Houston Resiliency Initiative (GHRI), we've completed thousands of improvements and upgrades across the Greater Houston region to help prevent outages and be ready for extreme weather events. The Community Progress Tracker helps you track resiliency upgrades in your community, as we work to build the most resilient coastal grid in the nation.
Installing stronger, more storm-resilient poles and upgrading equipment to better withstand extreme weather
Trimming and clearing high-risk trees and vegetation near power lines to reduce storm-related outages
Installing intelligent grid switching devices capable of self-healing to reduce the impact and duration of outages
Placing more power lines underground to improve overall grid resiliency
Most utility companies have an outage tracker, which helps customers see where extreme weather and storms have impacted electric infrastructure. CenterPoint has a new and updated outage tracker, too, at CenterPointEnergy.com/OutageTracker.
To help demonstrate the value of the GHRI upgrades, CenterPoint Energy wanted to provide customers with an additional tool to better track infrastructure improvements and see where they are taking place in neighborhoods and communities. The Community Progress Tracker allows customers to view location-specific actions and updates in a user-friendly map.
The tool is accessible via desktop computers and mobile devices. You can search by address or ZIP code or zoom into your area to view updates. Find your home or business by typing your address in the "Find a location" search function. A short “how-to” video is available to guide you through the features and help you get the most out of the tool.
If you cannot find your address, please make sure it is typed correctly into the search bar. If your address still does not appear, your home may be outside of our electric service territory.
The tracker displays a variety of new infrastructure improvements, including:
The Outage Tracker provides live outage status, storm impacts and real-time updates during power outages. It shows which areas are affected, how many customers are impacted, estimated restoration times and more. It’s designed to help customers stay informed during emergencies or service disruptions. The Community Progress Tracker provides details on long-term grid improvements, like new poles, tree trimming, undergrounding and automated devices.
CenterPoint Energy is actively working across its 12-county Greater Houston service area as part of the GHRI. The timing of improvements in your area depends on several factors, including system priorities, weather risk and coordination with local municipalities. While work may not be conducted directly in your neighborhood, the improvements we are making will help reduce storm-related outages and improve restoration times for all Houstonians.
If you don’t see activity in your area yet, it may be scheduled for a future phase. We encourage you to check the tracker regularly, as new updates are added as work progresses. We also take a series of steps to notify you directly before beginning work at or near your location.
The Community Progress Tracker map will be updated periodically to show any new improvements and projects across Greater Houston. Check the tracker regularly, as new updates will be added as work progresses.
