What Should You Do If You Smell Natural Gas?
Your safety is our top priority. While natural gas is a safe and reliable energy source, it is important to act quickly and carefully if you suspect a gas leak.
Natural gas is colorless and odorless, but for the safety of our customers and the community, it is given a distinctive smell, often described as rotten eggs or sulfur, so it can easily be detected. If you notice this smell, take it seriously and follow the steps below to protect yourself and those around you.
If you smell natural gas indoors or outdoors:
- Leave the area immediately – on foot.
- Do not use your cell phone, start a car or do anything that could cause a spark. Even a tiny spark could ignite the natural gas. Be sure to move away from the smell or any visible vapor until you are in a safe location.
- Once you are safe, call CenterPoint Energy and 911.
Do not email or report the leak online. If you are in the Greater Houston area, call 713-659-2111 and if you are in southwestern Indiana call 800-227-1376, to report the gas leak. Make the call from a safe distance and never assume someone else has already reported it. - Warn others.
If it is safe to do so, alert neighbors or people in the area to evacuate and keep clear of the potential leak. - Do not return to the area or attempt repairs.
Never try to locate or fix a gas leak yourself. Trained professionals will investigate and make any necessary repairs.
Stay safe and aware.
Trust your senses – if you smell something, don’t ignore it. Acting fast can help protect your, family, neighbors and the community.
